Maldives Women’s National Team will return home after exiting the 18th Asian Games Women’s Football tournament on Tuesday three straight losses not even scoring a single goal; conceding 21 goals in three games. Mohamed Athif and his players were on the end of three defeats in a group that featured Korea Republic, Indonesia and Chinese Taipei but, despite the losses, the coach remains upbeat about the long-term growth of the game in the Maldives.
“At the last Asian Games we conceded 15, 13 and 10 so I put up a target to not concede more than 10 goals in each game,” says Athif.
“What I can do with my players’ quality is to play very deep in defense because if we give the other teams space we know they will score. I don’t want us to get hurt and my players to lose confidence.”
Tuesday’s 7-0 loss to Chinese Taipei was the Maldives’ third following an opening 6-0 defeat against Indonesia and an 8-0 reversal at the hands of the Koreans that left the Maldives bottom of their group. But, with none of the score lines reaching double figures, Athif’s target was attained.
