Shaweed is popular among the candidates says Bassam

Male’, MALDIVES – General secretary of Football Associaton of Maldives, Bassam Adeel Jaleel has said that the chairman of normalization committee, Mohamed Shaweed won the AFC exco seat because of his popularity and closeness of the member nations among the region.

“Shaweed is very popular within the members of AFC and we did a good campaign till the last minute. And also he is very close to the members.”

Bassam also highlighted about the importance of winning a seat from the executive committee of the regionl football’s governing body.

“It is a huge success for the development of Maldives football to be in this level. We are very confident about getting good assistance from the friendly countries.”

Mohamed Shaweed won the seat for the Asian Football Confederation yesterday during the 26th AFC Annual Congress held in Manama, Bahrain.

AFC’s current president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has re-elected by acclamation for a four-year term until 2019.

“I am humbled and honoured to stand unopposed for the position of AFC President and FIFA Vice-President. I take this as a sign of your satisfaction with the work that I have done so far and your trust in me to lead this unique Confederation.” AFC President Shaikh Salman said after the election.
