We want to put pressure on senior players: Constantine

Indian Head coach Stephen Constantine said, he brought a young squad for SAFF Suzuki Cup not because he doesn’t respect the tournament but, to give young generation a good opportunity to show their talents in top level and put pressure on senior players by developing young ones.

“We want put pressure on senior players by developing young ones”

India defeated Sri Lanka by 2-0 in today’s Group B opener. Goals from Ashique Kuruniyan and Lallianzuala Channgte gave the defending champion a flying start to the campaign.

Speaking at the post match press conference, Constantine said that he is not happy about the performance of the team today despite the win.

“Yes, we have won. But, we could have scored few more goals. I am not happy about the performance today”

India won SAFF Championship 2009 with their U-23 squad. Players like Jeje Lalpekhlua broke through to the first team with the opportunity provided.

There were not many tournaments U-23 team can play. We only Olympics & Asian Games. India did not send us to Asian Games. So, my aim is to build a team that can last more than six years. And that can’t be done when you play five matches in five years. He added.

India will face old rival Maldives on Sunday. Before that, Maldives will play today’s losing side Sri Lanka on Friday.
