Our rivals shine in Asian Games and we are talking about building a team for future

Football Association of Maldives (FAM) came with a false promise of building a team for the future. The day current coach Petar Segt was appointed, FAM president Bassam reassured that FAM’s aim is to build a team for future and SAFF Championship is not a priority.

Now the domestic season is on a two month break to give national team time to prepare for SAFF Championship, which is not a priority for FAM to win.

Maldives best chance of giving youth players the experience of international level is Asian Games, hence we did not take part in the competition because that interrupts our preparation for the SAFF Championship, which is not a priority for FAM to win.

While we talk about building a team for the future, we are sending a senior team for SAFF Championship while India is more than happy to give their under 23 team that includes number of under 17 players the chance to play in the SAFF Championship.

While we prefer to dump Asian Games to prepare for SAFF Championship, other regional nations considered taking part in Asian Games as a great opportunity to build a team for the future.

Pakistan and Bangladesh are giving invaluable experience to their youngsters and both the nations are shining in the competition. Bangladesh finished second in their group that also contains Thailand, Uzbekistan and Qatar and advanced to the second round. Pakistan, finished third in their group that also contains Vietnam and Japan and reached second round as one of the four best third placed teams.

We are talking about building a team for future and playing in World Cup, while our rivals are practically working on it.
