Asian Games: Maldives womens team thrashed by South Korea

South Korea trashed the Maldives 8-0 in a Group A qualifying match of the women’s soccer tournament in the 2018 Asian Games at the Jakabaring Stadium here on Sunday.

South Korea dominated the whole match. Forward Son Hwayeon scored three times in the one-sided affair. The other goals were scored by Ji Soyun, Moon Mira and Lee Eunmi. Aminath Camilla scored an own goal just after the 30 minute mark to compound the Maldives’ misery.

Earlier, South Korea beat Chinese Taipei 2-1. And South Korea will face Indonesia in the last group match on Tuesday. Maldives lost to Indonesia 6 – 0 in the opening match and will face Chinese Taipei in their last qualification match.

South Korea is ranked number 15 in the world in FIFA’s global rankings and Maldives is ranked at 119. Maldives went into the qualification matches of Asian Games without any international friendly matches. Football Association of Maldives cancelled the last edition of women’s tournament.
