Maldives to play Qatar second division team

Maldives National Team will play a friendly game today at Qatar against Al-Markhiya Sports Club of Qatar, Al-Markhiya Sports Club is a Qatari second division team.

According to FAM, the match is scheduled to kickoff at 2100hrs, Male Time. This is the first friendly game ahead of SAFF Championship which will start on 4th of September at Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Maldives National Team has been training at Qatar since 6th of August with 27 players. Maldives team for SAFF Championship will travel to Dhaka directly from Doha.

Maldives played against Qatar’s Al Duhail last year in a friendly game. Maldives lost the game 1-0 where Al Duhail entered the match without large number of first team players who were with their respective national teams back then.

Maldives is placed in Group B with India and Sri Lanka in the SAFF Championship. Maldives will face Sri Lanka on Maldives’ opening game on 7th September.

  1. Friendly matches against weaker opponents makes you weak. Losing to second division no body is embarrassing. We go this low because no one wants to play with losers.
