Blues go five points clear at the top

New Radiant extended their lead at the top to five points after they claimed a comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Club Green Streets at the Galolhu National Stadium in the ongoing Ooredoo Dhivehi Premier League.

Hamza Mohamed, Ali Fasir and Mohamed Rasheed were among the goal scorers for the Blues.

The result sees, the Blues picked up 24 points after 9 games, five ahead of both Maziya and TC Sports Club in second and third respectively while a win for either side in Saturday evening’s game could cut the Blues lead back to just two points.

Meanwhile, Club Green Streets remained on fourth place after this loss, as they have 12 points after 9 games, two ahead of Thinadhoo who play the bottom side Kudahuvadhoo on Saturday’s earlier game.

Club Green Streets came into this game without their defender Petro Kovalchuk who missed out due to yellow card suspension while the Blues coach named Ali Ashfaq in the starting lineup after bringing him on as a second half substitute in their previous game.

The Blues dominated the proceedings and were unlucky not to be ahead in the second minute when Adrian Gallardo fired over the bar from inside the box after receiving a fine pass from Fasir.

A minute later, William Macko had the best chance for Club Green Streets when he tried to lift the ball over the Blues keeper Imran Mohamed’s head when he was out of position but his shot went over the bar.

Club Green Streets were dealt a blow when they were down to ten-man in the seventh minute, when Ali Shamis received marching orders from the referee for his dangerous tackle on Candela.

Gallardo then threatened to double his team’s lead on 12 minutes but he fired wide from inside the box.

Two minutes later, the Blues broke the deadlock when Hamza was found unmarked inside the box by a decent cross from Gallardo, and the former made no mistake with a stunning header from close range.

Just around half hour mark, Gallardo had a wonderful chance to make amends for his earlier misses but he fired narrowly wide as he hits the side netting after receiving a decent ball from Fasir.

The final chance of the first half would fall to Ashfaq but his decent strike from inside the box was blocked by Green Streets defenders with 8 minutes remaining in the first half.

Despite going a man and goal down in the early minutes of the first half, Club Green Streets fought hard as they kept the score just 1-0 at half-time.

The Blues started the second half promisingly, and with just six minutes after restart Ibrahim Fazeel nearly added a second for his side but his headed attempt missed the target after receiving a decent cross from Fasir.

A minute later, Ashfaq had another chance for the Blues but his strike from inside the box went our for a corner.

Yet, Fasir would double his team’s lead in the 64th minute, when he netted from close range through the rebounded ball from Ashfaq’s shot from outside the box.

Then on 77 minutes, Ashfaq had another chance to increase his team’s lead but he missed the target again.

And the third goal arrived five minutes from time, when second half substitute Mohamed netted from close range to secure all three points for his team.

There were further chances for both sides, although Fasir missed the target as he lifted the ball over the bar in the 89th minute before Sobol Illia fired wide for Club Green Streets from a free-kick in the injury time.
