TC hold Green Streets in tense opener

The opening fixture of second round of Male’ League saw a goal a piece in either half with Sobol Illia giving the new boys the lead with a stunning free-kick on half hour mark while Cornelius Stewart grabbed the equalizing goal with a penalty in the final quarter of the game.

Club Green Streets controlled the first half, and it was Illia who had the first attempt on target when he forced a save from TC Keeper Kiran on 6 minutes when fired a free-kick from outside the box.

TC Sports Club’s best chance of the half fell to Ali Nafiu in the 21st minute, when he headed over the bar from a cross by Cornelius Stewart.

The deadlock was broken on 30 minutes, when Illia struck a curling free-kick into the top corner of the net from the distance.

Club Green Streets had a decent chance to double their lead on 37 minutes when Ahmed Rasheed fired a shot inches over the bar from inside the box. The opening half ended 1-0 for the newly promoted Club Green Streets who won their previous encounter against TC couple of days ago.

TC Sports Club continued to apply pressure after the break, with Ibrahim Mahudhee, Cornelius Stewart all having attempts of their own. First it was Mahudhee who fired his shot wide three minutes after the break, then in the 61st minute, Stewart’s shot from inside the box went wide. Three minutes later, Mahudhee fired another shot but this time it went straight into the gloves of Keeper Jun Kochi, he then headed over the bar from inside the box.

Club Green Streets defence were on top for the most of the match but, TC made it 1-1 on 79 minutes, Stewart scoring from the penalty spot after Mohamed Azzam was fouled by Green Streets Keeper Jun Kochi.

Stewart then missed a decent header to grab all three points for TC in the 90th minute.

The result puts third-placed Green Streets on 14 points, just one point behind second-placed New Radiant, who later play Club Valencia. Meanwhile, TC remain on 11 points but they climbed to 4th place, one point ahead of Club Eagles on fifth.
